There is no better symbol of Christmas in Lanzarote than the Belén. The tradition of creating Belén (nativity scene) at Christmas goes back to St Francis of Assisi in 1233 and it wasn't till the 18th century that they caught on in Spain. At this time of the year residents of Lanzarote drive all over the island checking out the beautiful nativities that pop up in many Plaza, shopping centres, shop windows, private courtyards in fact anywhere. The main ones in Lanzarote are in Haria, San Bartolomé, Tías, Yaiza and Arrecife. Check out the photos below, these were taken at the Belén in Haria yesterday.
