Unfortunately this week (Saturday) a friend had a bad turn and ended up feeling very ill, the local doctor was called and 20 minutes later he has on the phone to the local private hospital requesting an ambulance. Again within another 20 minutes he was being taken away very quickly in the ambulance. By the time I arrived at the hospital he was already being seen by a doctor and shortly after was taken away to have a full bank of tests done. Its now Wednesday and he is being released after treatment. Due to this incident he and his wife have also missed there flights back to Edinburgh, but on checking with Ryanair they can re-book with no cost a flight at a later date providing they have a permission to fly certificate. Very important piece of paper, without it you will have to re-book and pay again.
Lessons learnt are do not under any circumstances think that you will get the same treatment as my friend if you do not have Travel Insurance, by using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you will be given emergency medical care at the local hospital but after that you will be charged for any further treatment. You may be able to claim some of the cost back but make sure you check out the NHS web site for further details. It states on the back of the EHIC card, Make sure you have valid travel insurance. Good advice.
